Understanding Cellulite: It's Not Necessarily about Your Weight

There are few skin conditions more frustrating than cellulite, which appears on people of all ages, sizes, and body types — cellulite is a true equal opportunity offender. But contrary to what most people think, carrying extra weight doesn’t cause cellulite — the problem has more to do with the structure, genes, and gender of the person than it does the number of pounds.

At LaBelle Medical Spa, Dr. Alireza Mahmoudieh and our team understand the frustration that comes with cellulite, which is why we offer an innovative solution — Cynosure® TempSure™ Envi. Its effects range from temporary to semi-permanent, but it can change the way you look and feel about yourself.

But, before we get into the solution, let’s take a look at what’s really behind cellulite and the role weight plays.

Cellulite: A woman’s world

Unfortunately for women, cellulite is often part and parcel of their gender. In fact, cellulite affects between 80 and 90% of women of all sizes at some point in their lives, and it largely has to do with three things. First, women have a different structural network underneath their skin than men do, with connective fibers that run parallel to each other, rather than in the criss-cross pattern that men enjoy. This means more fat can push through to the surface, creating that lumpy appearance.

Second, women tend to carry more adipose fat around their hips, thighs, and buttcks than men. This is related to their child-bearing role.

Third, women’s production of collagen, a structural protein is directly influenced by female hormone levels (e.g. estrogen). Lower hormone levels mean decreased collagen and reduced blood circulation in the connective tissue. This, in turn, weakens the skin’s support system and allows more fat to push through.

Despite cellulite’s presence predominantly in women, men aren’t immune — around 10% of men have the condition.

Cellulite is in your genes

If you’re blessed with genes that promote strong tissue, better circulation, and a speedy metabolism, consider yourself blessed — you may not be prone to cellulite. Conversely, if you’ve inherited a propensity for weaker tissue, sluggish circulation, and uneven fat distribution, it’s likely you’ll develop the same cellulite your mother and other female family members had.

Cellulite and excess body fat

As we’ve seen above, people of all shapes and sizes can develop cellulite since the condition has to do primarily with the relationship between connective tissue and fat. This means no matter how skinny or toned you may be, the structure of your skin tissue can still allow what little fat you may be carrying to make its way to the surface and cause the characteristic dimpling of cellulite.

Please understand, though, that weight still plays a critical role, because the more excess fat you’re carrying, the more there is to rise to the surface. This will make your cellulite more pronounced.

The solution for cellulite

So you’ve got cellulite. What can you do about it? Here at La Belle Medical Spa, we’ve armed ourselves with the TempSure Envi, which delivers radiofrequency energy into your skin to tighten and smooth the surface area.

The energy passes through your skin’s outer layer, the epidermis, without damage, heating up the dermis tissue below and tightening your tissue. And your results continue to improve over the weeks following your treatment as your body responds to the TempSure Envi treatment by synthesizing collagen, the protein responsible for much of your tissue’s support function.

As your tissue rebuilds with new collagen, your skin becomes structurally stronger and more evenly toned. You will still need to keep up with periodic TempSure Envi treatments to maintain your great results, which we can space apart by weeks or months (depending upon your needs) for maximum effect.
